Volume Based Curbside Collection Program

In 1994 the Town of Sun Prairie instituted a volume based garbage collection program. The program allows for collection of one 35 gallon can or bag of garbage per week. The Town Board chose this option in order to contain costs, save on landfill space and encourage recycling efforts.

How does the Program Work?

The special charge on your tax bill is the cost of collection and disposal of one 35 gallon bag or can of trash per week. You are allowed to discard occasional "extra" garbage without the extra cost (i.e. holidays, etc.). If you generate more than 35 gallons of trash per week on a regular basis, you need to contract with the waste hauler (Waste Management) for additional collection.

What if a Resident needs the Additional Service?

When a resident needs additional service they contact the waste hauler (Waste Management 273-2500) and contract directly with them for that service. The additional service allows a resident to put out up to four cans of garbage on a weekly basis. Waste Management will bill the resident $3.50 per month, contracts are for a six month period.

Why a Volume Based System?

Under the "unlimited system", people who generate 3 to 4 bags of garbage per week pay the same amount as those who generate only one bag per week. The volume option is viewed by many to be more fair. A volume based system also encourages recycling, contains costs and saves landfill space. With a volume based system the Town can qualify for state grant money. The grant money received during a year is used the following year to reduce the residents' special charge for recycling collection.

Can I Still Set Out Plastic Bags?

You can set out up to one bag per week without using a garbage can. Bags may be up to 35 gallons and must weigh less that 50 pounds. If you set out more than one bag, the hauler asks that you place the bags in a 35 gallon can. By doing so, the driver does not have to decide if you set out more than 35 gallons.

Can I Use My existing Trash Can?

You may use your existing trash can, provided that it is within the range of 32-38 gallons. This range (35 gallons +/-3 gallons) was chosen because these are the most popular sizes for trash cans.

Will the Recycling Program Change?

The collection of your recycling material will not change. Recyclable material is to be put in the recycling bin. Follow the specific information concerning what is allowed and preparation.

Special Charge for Curbside Collection

The cost of garbage and recycling collection is added as a special charge on the property owners tax bill.
